Compassion Radio Presents:

NORM NELSON’S NOTA-BOOKS * for 2002

* a conflation of “Notable Books”

As a service to those who are interested in Compassion Radio’s “Compassion Radio” ministry, I am offering a list of twelve books that, I believe, could be read with great profit during the year 2002.

Each work has something vitally important to contribute to a Christian understanding of the world we live in right now. You will notice a strong “global” dimension to the list. That is intentional, because we American Christians are, on the whole, woefully weak in a knowledge of the world beyond our borders. I pray that these recommended readings will help to correct this deficiency for those of you who will read them.

All the books are currently in print. One is available through our own bookstore.  All others are available through our Amazon.com affiliate account, which brings them to you more inexpensively, and helps the ministry in a small way. Our bookstore, and our Amazon account can be accessed by  clicking here.  Just follow the "Amazon.com Selections" link for our expanded catalog.

All of these books are so rich in content, that if any of them has been read before, a re-read is still worthwhile. In fact, these books should be read at least twice. In addition, each of them has a special relevance to the present moment of our history.  Brief comments on each title are provided below...

An added note: Whenever I recommend books, I am aware that some who read them will assume that I agree with everything in them. Please know that is not true. Only God’s Word is infallibly true. These are to stimulate your thinking.

Good reading!

Norm Nelson

OPERATION WORLD, Patrick Johnson and Jason Mandryk

U.S. Center for World Mission

No book, except for the Bible itself, is as informative and important for grasping the nature and scope of the Christian movement around the world, as is this guide to nations and peoples. Every believer in America should study this resource daily.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ISLAM, George W. Braswell, Jr.

Islam, Its Prophet, Peoples, Politics and Power

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP, Dietrich Bonhoffer

Macmillan

Written by a German pastor and theologian who was martyred by the Nazis, this book is an antidote to the “cheap grace” and self-serving religiosity of much American Christianity today. It is a challenging read in every way. I first read it in the 1960’s, and have never gotten over it!

THEIR BLOOD CRIES OUT, Paul Marshall

Word

The persecution of Christians is a global reality that is finally getting the attention it deserves. This book covers the subject better than any that I have seen. It not only describes the situation, but also suggests means of constructive action. Listen for Paul Marshall on “Compassion Radio” soon.

THE PROBLEM OF PAIN, C. S. Lewis

Macmillan

The attacks of September 11, 2001, posed the question for millions: Why do bad things happen to good people? There are lots of shallow treatments of this issue in the bookstores. Lewis’ book is Biblical, profound…and true. A classic!

THE PEACEMAKING POWER OF PRAYER, John D. Robb and James A. Hill

Broadman and Holman   (available directly from CR)

In a world of violent international conflict, even Christians tend to think like secularists, and underestimate the power of prayer. This exciting book shows how prayer has done more than bombs and bullets to bring peace to Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda, and other troubled lands. It is certainly our best weapon against terrorism. John Robb has been a guest on “Compassion Radio”.

Four new college grads (from my alma mater, Westmont College) travel the world and discover “The Epic Life”. They were recently interviewed on “Compassion Radio”.
