Beginning in March of 1997, the
Karen villages have been under assault and repression, with their villages
being shelled, burned and looted.
The Karen have been tortured and executed.
The women have been raped, and the young men taken as forced laborers.
These displaced Karen people
wander in the forests and mountains, surviving on fruits, shoots, tubers and
leaves.
Simple, unarmed hill-tribes
civilians have fled Myanmar (formerly called Burma) to seek refuge in
Thailand. More than 100,000 have been struggling to survive war atrocities.
The Karen were evangelized
during the period of British colonial rule from 1886 to 1948.
The Christian presence has
brought them hostility and persecution from a brutal government.
The government tolerates the
Buddhist Karens. The Christians who have escaped to Thailand are now
experiencing religious persecution there.
Amid the horrors of this war,
Christian refugees cling to God and say, ‘God is good enough for us."

Compassion Radio has been able to provide supplies and Bibles to this
refugee area. While there, we were able to visit not only their village and
church, but their Bible School for young people. They sang a beautiful
version of the Hallelujah Chorus for us.
