Imagine if you can, the wistful
experience of losing your vision...of sliding away into the dark,
disorienting world of blindness, and not being able to see the radiant faces
of those you love...your children...your grandchildren...your parents...and
others for whom you care so deeply. Surely you would suffer a great loss if
you could not see, anymore, the kindly expressions on the faces of your
family.
The truth is, that is precisely
the deprivation experienced by many thousands of men and women, boys and
girls in the tiny West African country of Ghana. For a variety of reasons,
eye diseases exist at epidemic levels in Ghana, and, as Norm and Cher
learned on a recent visit there, life is lived in utter darkness by
multitudes of people.

Norm and Cher Nelson,
scrubbed and suited, stood in the operating room and watched the steady
hands of Christian American and African doctors perform sight-restoring
surgeries on victims of cataracts, glaucoma and other eye disorders.

In three different cities (Accra, Cape Coast and Kesei) they saw God
glorified in the healing of blind eyes. And saw the Gospel proclaimed
clearly and lovingly, and received gratefully, because hearts had been
opened by the experience of Christian compassion.

What better gift could be given
that the gift of sight to a mother who could not otherwise see the child she
loves...or to a man who could not otherwise see the wife he cherishes, or to
the child who otherwise could not explore the wonders of God’s world? This
gift of mercy given in the name of Jesus could very well enable the
recipient to see Jesus, and to commit their live to the Great Physician.
